Unpaid Rates Accounts

NMMM clamps down on unpaid rates accounts

In the case of unpaid municipal accounts, the NMMM blocks the prepaid meter of that property.  This is particularly inconvenient where a landlord is renting to tenants, as they are inconvenienced with no electricity.

Although statements are no longer posted out by the NMMM, it is still an owners responsibility to find out the total amount due and make sure this amount is paid promptly.  You can request your statement in the following ways:

Should your prepaid meter be blocked due to non-payment, you will need to follow these steps to sort this out:

  • Contact the call centre to confirm the current outstanding balance on 041 506 5555, quoting your account number
  • Settle the full outstanding balance plus a reconnection fee (currently R350)
  • Take proof of payment (including reconnection fee) to the Munelec offices situated in 47-48 Harrower Rd, Kensington, Port Elizabeth, to have the prepaid meter unblocked
  • If you are not based in PE the proof of payment needs to be faxed to 041 506 1442 and emailed to reconnections@mandelametro.gov.za – after sending through the documents contact the call centre to ensure meter is unblocked.
